Hedleyhope News

As Seen on Youtube. The Big Lottery Fund film made about the Community Association in November can be seen on the web: click here for the video. You can score the video from 0 – 5 stars by selecting the stars above the video. The video can also be seen on Youtube.
The real star of the show, showing BAFTA-like-talent was Geoff Dixon as the Wizard of the Woods (and himself also). Seven people were interviewed on the day and many people were filmed working and playing - but unfortunately not everyone who was filmed on the day could be shown in the final 3 minute video. Thank you to everyone who took part in the filming including the Ladies Club for providing hospitality for the film crew. Be seeing ewe – and thanks for all the grass.
Woodland thinning As reported in the last issue of Hedleyhope News we will be carrying out some woodland thinning in East Hedleyhope in February 2009. The work will be carried out by young people from Derwentside College under the supervision of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
The thinning will concentrate on areas under the Red Bridge and near the village where non-native trees will be thinned. An inspection by the Bridge Engineer found that the trees were threatening to damage the structure of the Red Bridge. Thinning around the Bridge will be helping the County Council in its care of the Bridge. Thinning in the wood will give more light and space for the remaining trees and the wildflowers planted there. Residents are more than welcome to take part in the thinning work – see Dates for your Diary.
Also in February, if funding can be found, there is a possibility that students from Houghall Agricultural College will be planting young native trees like Hazel in the wood near East Hedleyhope. See the web page for more information.

The Nature Reserve
|
Hedleyhope Community Association manages a 28ha nature reserve on land leased from Durham County Council.
The Nature Reserve, called Hedleyhill Colliery Wood and Meadow, includes woodland, meadow and riverside and incorporates two Sites of Nature Conservation Importance. The Association is currently seeking the designation of the Reserve as a Local Nature Reserve to secure its long-term legal protection.
Volunteers from the Community Association regularly carry out a range of public events and conservation tasks on the Nature Reserve such as tree planting or coppicing. A children’s Nature Club also holds events on the Nature Reserve at least 7 times a year.
